The Hiccups

As I gently rock my newborn back and forth in our rocker and rubbing her back, I know that her hiccups will soon be gone. The discomfort she must feel as she squirms inside my arms wanting the hiccups to go away must be painful – but it’s something externally I can’t control. I just have to watch her through this natural process and comfort her while she goes through yet another case of her daily hiccups. Knowing, as her mom, they will eventually cease – she doesn’t know. All she wants is the discomfort to go away.

One episode of her hiccups and God revealed to me that children of God go through their own case of the hiccups as well. Only these hiccups come in the form of tight trials and stressful times. We experience discomfort in our daily lives – a low point in marriage, a bad break up, a new stressful boss or a sickness just to name a few. But because of the discomfort, we ask God to remove it because we don’t want to feel the agony anymore.

But God knows there is a specific ending point to your natural problem.

In the book of Jeremiah, God spoke to the exiles through the prophet Jeremiah, specifically telling them that after they go through some discomfort He will bring them back to a good place.

Jeremiah 29:10 “For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years of exile have been completed for Babylon, I will visit (inspect) you and keep My good promise to you, to bring you back to this place. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans and thoughts I have for you’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.”

God has a plan concerning each one of you, knowing that you will have to go through some discomfort, some stress some tight places but Gods plan isn’t for us to stay there long. They are called ‘seasons’. Each ordered season by God has its purpose and plan.

So just as I was in the rocker holding baby, God is still holding you through your hiccups because He knows there is an expected end.
